Taxis in Marrakech: how they work
Two kinds of taxi, a meter that is not always used, and cash only. Here is what to know before you raise your hand.

Marrakech has two kinds of taxi. Petits taxis are small beige cars with a meter: they take up to three passengers and stay inside the city. Grands taxis are larger, have no meter and are priced by destination, including for other towns. Both are paid in cash.
Petit taxi, grand taxi or private transfer
| Petit taxi | Grand taxi | Private transfer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passengers | Up to 3 | More than 3 | 1 to 17, depending on the vehicle |
| Where it goes | Inside the city only | City and other towns | Airport, city and beyond |
| Price | Meter, or a price quoted by the driver | By destination, no meter | Fixed before you travel |
| Payment | Cash, in dirhams | Cash, in dirhams | Online, by PayPal |
| Booking | Hailed in the street or at a rank | At a rank | In advance, driver waits with your name |
How to take a taxi
- In the street: stand on the side of the road in the direction you are going and raise your hand.
- At a rank: near the big squares, the train station and outside the airport arrivals hall.
- From a riad or a hotel: ask reception to call one. In the Medina the taxi waits at the nearest gate.
The meter and the price
A petit taxi is supposed to run its meter. With visitors, many drivers prefer to announce a price. You have two reasonable options: ask for the meter as you get in, or agree the price before the car moves. At night the tariff is higher, which is legitimate.
Paying
Taxis are paid in cash and in dirhams. Keep small notes and coins: drivers often have little change. If you land without dirhams, the guide to money at the airport shows where to get some.
Taxi apps
Uber returned to Marrakech on 27 November 2025 and works with licensed vehicles. Other apps exist, with a less clear legal footing. The Uber guide explains where things stand.
When to choose something else
- More than three of you: one petit taxi is not enough.
- A late arrival at the airport: see taxis at night.
- A riad in the Medina: a driver who knows which gate to use saves a long search.
- Another town: see transfers from Marrakech to other cities.
