Money at Marrakech airport: dirhams, ATMs, cards and cash

You cannot buy dirhams before you leave home. Here is where to get them when you land, and what you will need cash for in the first hour.

By the Medina Transfers team  ·  Updated 12 October 2026

The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency: you get it on arrival, not before. At Marrakech Menara Airport, ATMs and exchange counters are near baggage reclaim and by the exits. You may bring in or take out up to 2,000 dirhams.

Where to get dirhams when you land

  • ATMs: near baggage reclaim and by the exits of the arrivals hall. Your bank may charge a fee for withdrawals abroad.
  • Exchange counters: in the same areas. Rates at the airport can be less favourable than in the city, so change what you need for the first day.

Card or cash in Marrakech

Cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants and larger shops. Taxis, the souks, small cafés and tips are paid in cash. Keep small notes and coins: change is often short.

The rules to know

  • 2,000 dirhams is the limit for bringing dirhams into Morocco or taking them out.
  • Foreign currency worth 100,000 dirhams or more must be declared to customs.
  • Before you fly home, spend or change back your remaining dirhams: they are very hard to exchange abroad.
