Getting around Marrakech with a private driver

How the districts of Marrakech fit together, how long it takes to cross from one to another, and when a driver is simpler than a taxi.

By the Medina Transfers team  ·  Updated 12 October 2026

Marrakech is compact: by car, 10 to 20 minutes separate the Medina, Gueliz and Hivernage, and 20 to 30 minutes the centre from the Palmeraie. A private driver is useful for a group, an evening out, or a riad that taxis cannot reach.

The districts

DistrictWhat it isAccess by car
MedinaThe walled old town: souks, riads, Jemaa el-FnaLimited to the gates and a few streets
GuelizThe modern centre: shops, restaurants, train stationEverywhere
HivernageHotels, the Palais des Congrès, Menara MallEverywhere
PalmeraieResorts, villas and golf, north-east of the cityEverywhere, on small roads

When a driver is simpler than a taxi

  • More than three people. A petit taxi takes three passengers. One vehicle keeps a family or a group together.
  • Dinner in the Palmeraie or on the Ourika road. Finding a taxi back late in the evening is uncertain. A driver who waits removes the question.
  • A riad in the Medina at night. The driver knows which gate to use and tells you where he will be when you come out.
  • A full day. Gardens, a museum, lunch, the souks: one driver for the day, who waits at each stop.

Frequently asked questions

How many passengers does a taxi take in Marrakech?

A petit taxi takes three passengers. A larger group needs two taxis or one pre-booked vehicle.

Can a driver wait while we have dinner?

Yes. Ask for a driver at your disposal for the evening under "Other destination" in the booking form, with your schedule.

Can a car reach my riad in the Medina?

Only if it stands on a street open to traffic. Otherwise the driver stops at the nearest gate and tells you the meeting point.
