The official taxi counter at Marrakech airport
Since 2023 airport taxis are booked and paid at a single counter in arrivals, at a fixed fare by zone. Here is how it works, what travellers pay, and when a private vehicle costs less and carries you in more comfort.
By the Medina Transfers team · Updated 25 October 2026
Marrakech Menara Airport has had a single official taxi counter in the arrivals hall since May 2023. You give your destination, pay a fixed fare by distance zone, get a receipt and are assigned a petit or grand taxi. The fares set by the province in January 2024 range from 100 to 160 dirhams for a grand taxi by day, plus a counter fee. For 4 passengers or more, and at night, a private transfer at €20 per vehicle usually costs less, in a larger and more comfortable vehicle.
How the taxi counter works
- After customs, in the arrivals hall, look for the taxi counter. Ignore anyone who offers a taxi inside the terminal.
- Give your destination: the name of your hotel, or the gate or square closest to your riad. The agent works out the zone.
- Pay the fare for the zone, plus the counter fee. Travellers report that card payment is accepted; keep dirhams for the fee and tips.
- Keep the receipt: it shows what you paid. You should not pay the driver again for the same ride.
- Go to the taxi rank outside and hand your receipt to the assigned driver.
The system was set up to end the haggling at the rank. It works 24 hours a day. What it does not do is plan your arrival: nobody waits for you with your name, and nobody knows in advance where your riad is.

Fares by zone
The airport taxi fares were set by the province of Marrakech and published by the Moroccan press on 1 January 2024. They go by distance zone from the airport:
| Zone (distance from the airport) | Grand taxi, daytime |
|---|---|
| Under 3 km | 100 dirhams |
| 3 to 5 km | 110 dirhams |
| 5 to 7 km | 120 dirhams |
| Further zones, up to 13 to 15 km | Up to 160 dirhams |
For a petit taxi, the same publication gives 80 dirhams by day and 120 at night in the first zone. A counter fee is added to every fare; its amount was not published. The Medina, Gueliz and Hivernage are generally in the zones of 5 to 7 km; the Palmeraie is further.
These are the latest fares we found in print. They may have changed since 2024: the fare shown at the counter is the one that applies. We found no official 2026 tariff online.

Petit taxi or grand taxi
| Petit taxi | Grand taxi | Medina Transfers vehicle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passengers | Up to 3 | Up to 6 | Up to 7 in a standard vehicle, up to 17 in a minibus |
| Luggage | Small boot, often a roof rack | Limited, depends on the car | Room for the group's suitcases |
| Comfort | Small city car | Older saloon cars are common | Air-conditioned van or minivan |
| Child seats | Rarely | Rarely | On request, confirmed by our team |
| Driver waiting for you | No | No | Yes, with your name, flight followed |
A petit taxi is fine for one or two people with cabin bags. With a family, a group or a lot of luggage, the size of the car becomes the problem before the price does.
Counter taxi or private transfer: which costs less?
The counter charges per taxi; a private transfer is charged per vehicle for the whole group. That is what changes the result.
| Who travels | Taxi counter, to the Medina | Medina Transfers, to the Medina |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 people, daytime | One taxi: about 110 to 120 dirhams + counter fee | €20 per vehicle |
| 1 to 3 people, at night | Night rate, higher than by day + counter fee | €20, same price day and night |
| 4 to 6 people | Two petit taxis, or one grand taxi if the luggage fits | €20 for one vehicle |
| 7 people | Two or three taxis | €20 for one vehicle |
| 8 to 17 people | Three to six taxis | €80 for one minibus |
For 4 passengers or more, our price per vehicle is lower than the total of the taxis you would need, and everyone travels together. At night, when the counter rate rises, our price does not change. For one or two travellers with light bags in the daytime, the counter is the cheaper option, and we prefer to say so.
What a private transfer adds
- A larger, more comfortable vehicle: an air-conditioned van or minivan with room for every suitcase, instead of a small city car.
- A driver waiting with your name outside arrivals: no counter, no queue at the rank.
- Your flight is followed, with 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.
- The gate closest to your riad, planned before you land: our Medina page lists the usual drop-off point for 64 riads and hotels.
- Child seats on request, confirmed by our team with your booking.
- A price fixed before you fly: a 50 % deposit online, the balance in cash to the driver at pick-up, in euros or dirhams.

Which taxi for which trip
Morocco has two kinds of taxi, and the difference matters at the airport. Petit taxis are small city cars allowed to drive inside the urban area of Marrakech only, with three passengers at most. Grand taxis are larger cars that can leave the city, with up to six passengers. The published zone table stops at 13 to 15 km from the airport, which covers the Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage, the Palmeraie and most hotel areas.
For anything further, such as the Agafay desert, the Ourika valley, Essaouira or Agadir, you need a grand taxi for a long distance, and the published zones no longer apply. A long road trip in an older saloon with suitcases on your knees is where a private vehicle makes the most difference. Our transfers from Marrakech to other cities give a fixed price per vehicle for each destination, tolls included.
Three arrivals, three answers
A couple with cabin bags, landing at 2 pm
The counter is a good choice. One petit taxi carries both of you, the fare for the Medina zone is around 110 to 120 dirhams plus the counter fee, and there is daylight to find your riad from the gate. Ask your host for the exact gate before you fly.
A family of five with four suitcases, landing at 11:30 pm
The counter means two taxis at the night rate, two counter fees, the family split between two cars, and no child seat. With us, one air-conditioned vehicle at €20 carries the five of you and the luggage, the driver waits with your name even if the flight is late, and child seats are available on request, confirmed by our team.
A group of ten friends
That is three or four taxis from the counter, with luggage spread across them. A minibus at €80 carries the whole group to the same address at the same time, and the price is known before you travel.
Before you land: a short checklist
- Write down the full name of your hotel or riad, and the gate or square closest to it.
- Send your arrival time to your host, so someone can meet you at the gate if you take a taxi.
- Decide before the flight: counter taxi or pre-booked transfer. Deciding in the hall, tired, with children and bags, is when travellers pay the most.
- If you travel with children, check the seats: airport taxis rarely have them. With us, give each child's age in the booking form.
- Keep a little cash in dirhams for tips and small purchases. For street taxis in town after your arrival, see our guide to taxis in Marrakech.
If you take a taxi from the counter
- Get dirhams first: ATMs and exchange counters are in the arrivals hall. Our guide to money at Marrakech airport explains where.
- Know your drop-off point: for a riad, ask your host the name of the closest gate or square, and send them your arrival time.
- Check the zone written on your receipt before you leave the counter.
- Do not pay twice: the fare is paid at the counter. Keep small notes for a tip.
- Refuse offers inside the terminal: travellers have been overcharged by drivers outside the official system.
How booking a private transfer works
- Fill in the form on this page: date, flight time, number of passengers, the name of your hotel or riad, and the age of any children who need a seat.
- Pay the 50 % deposit online to confirm the booking. The price is fixed at this point: it will not change with the time of night, the traffic or a delayed flight.
- Our team confirms your booking, including child seats when you asked for them.
- Your driver waits for you outside arrivals with a sign bearing your name, and follows your flight.
- Pay the balance in cash to the driver at pick-up, in euros or in dirhams.
No queue at the counter, no second taxi for the rest of the family, and one vehicle with room for everyone.
Arriving late at night
The counter works around the clock, at the night rate. Late arrivals are also when queues at passport control and at the rank can grow, and when walking through dark Medina lanes with suitcases is least pleasant. A pre-booked transfer keeps the same price at night, and the driver adjusts to your real landing time. If you also want to skip the passport queue, our fast track with transfer can be added to the booking.
Going back to the airport
There is no counter in town: taxis are hailed in the street or booked by your hotel, and the fare is agreed with the driver. Our transfer to the airport costs the same as the arrival, €20 per vehicle. Our guide on how early to arrive at Marrakech airport helps you choose the pick-up time.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official taxi counter at Marrakech airport?
Yes. Since May 2023 a single counter in the arrivals hall books airport taxis at fares set by the authorities. You give your destination, pay, receive a receipt and are assigned a taxi.
How much is the taxi from the counter to the Medina?
The fares set by the province in January 2024 go by distance zone: 100 dirhams under 3 km, 110 from 3 to 5 km, 120 from 5 to 7 km, up to 160 from 13 to 15 km for a grand taxi, with a higher night rate. A counter fee is added. These are the latest published figures; check the fare shown at the counter.
Can I pay by card at the taxi counter?
Travellers report that card payment is possible at the counter. Carry dirhams anyway: the counter fee and tips are usually paid in cash.
How many people fit in an airport taxi?
A petit taxi takes up to 3 passengers and a grand taxi up to 6, with limited room for luggage. A group of 4 or more usually needs two taxis.
Is a private transfer cheaper than the taxi counter?
For 4 passengers or more, yes in most cases: one private vehicle costs €20 for 1 to 7 passengers, while the counter charges per taxi. At night the counter rate rises, while our price stays the same. For 1 to 3 travellers in the daytime, the counter fare is lower.
Do airport taxis have child seats?
Usually not. With Medina Transfers, child seats are available on request: tell us the age of each child in the booking form and our team confirms the seats with your booking.
Does the taxi go to my riad door?
No vehicle enters most lanes of the Medina. The taxi stops at a gate or a square; a private driver chooses the gate closest to your riad when you give its name.
What if I arrive in the middle of the night?
The counter works around the clock, at the night rate. A pre-booked private transfer keeps the same price day and night, and the driver waits for you with your name even if your flight is late.
