Queues at Marrakech airport and how early to arrive

Stories of endless queues at Marrakech airport are mostly out of date. Here is what the figures say in 2026, where time is still lost, and when to leave your hotel.

By the Medina Transfers team  ·  Updated 12 October 2026

Queues at Marrakech airport are much shorter than their reputation. For the first half of 2026 the airport operator reported an average of 6.86 minutes at arrivals border control and 5.09 minutes at departures. Peaks remain, on Sundays and in holiday periods. For a departure, plan to be at the airport three hours before an international flight, with a printed boarding pass if you fly easyJet or Ryanair.

An average does not describe the worst hour. It does show the trend: the long waits that made headlines in 2018 and again in April 2024 are no longer the norm.

Why it improved, and why it can still be slow

  • The scanners at the terminal doors were removed on 7 March 2025. Everyone used to queue there before even reaching check-in.
  • Passport control was reinforced. Travellers reported no major arrival queues in early 2026.
  • The airport is over capacity. It handled 10,197,736 passengers in 2025, up 10 per cent, and 5,636,776 in the first half of 2026, in a terminal designed for about 9 million a year.
  • An extension is under way. The contract was awarded in August 2025. Until it opens, peak hours stay tight.

On arrival: the steps

  1. Passport control. There is no paper form to fill in. Check that the officer stamps your passport: travellers without an entry stamp have had difficulties when leaving.
  2. Baggage reclaim. The ATMs, exchange counters and phone stands are in this area and towards the exit.
  3. Customs, then the arrivals hall, where drivers wait with name boards.

Count 30 to 45 minutes from the aircraft door to the exit in a quiet period, and more when several flights land together. The arrival guide describes each step, and the fast track guide explains the paid priority lane.

On departure: the steps

  1. Check-in or bag drop. With easyJet, a document check at the bag-drop desk is required even if you travel with hand luggage only.
  2. Security. Liquids in containers of 100 ml at most, in one transparent one-litre bag.
  3. Passport control. Ten minutes on a quiet day, 40 to 60 minutes or more when many flights leave together, according to travellers.
  4. The gate. Shops, cafés and the lounge are after passport control.

The printed boarding pass

This is the rule that catches most travellers out. easyJet states that mobile boarding passes are not available at Marrakech because of local regulations: you must print your pass and go to the bag-drop desk for a document check. Ryanair lists Morocco among the places where its mobile boarding passes are not accepted, and kept paper passes for Morocco when it moved to digital-only passes in November 2025.

In practice: print the boarding pass at your hotel or before you leave home, and go to the airline desk first, even without a suitcase. If you fly with another airline, check its own rule for Marrakech before the day.

How early to arrive

Your situationBe at the airport
International flight, ordinary weekday2 hours 30 to 3 hours before
Sunday, school holidays, festive periods3 hours before
Hand luggage only, with easyJet or RyanairStill 2 hours 30 to 3 hours: the desk check is compulsory

Royal Air Maroc closes its check-in counters 60 minutes before departure. Guides advise three hours for international flights, and frequent travellers settle between two and three. The margin costs you a coffee at the gate; the lack of it costs a flight.

When to leave your hotel

Count back from the time you want to be at the airport:

FromDrive to the airportLeave before the flight
Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage15 to 20 minutesAbout 3 hours 30
Palmeraie25 to 35 minutesAbout 3 hours 45

From a riad in the Medina, add the walk to the gate where the car waits. At the end of the afternoon the avenues are slower. A booked transfer to the airport costs €20 per vehicle for 1 to 7 passengers from the Medina and the city centre, and €30 from the Palmeraie; the drive times guide gives the detail by district.

Smoking, liquids and other practical points

  • Smoking: sources contradict each other on a smoking area after security. The only certain place is outside the terminal, before you go in.
  • Liquids: the 100 ml rule applies. Duty-free purchases in sealed bags are accepted.
  • Dirhams: spend or change them before passport control. See money at the airport.

Practical cases

A 7am flight

Be at the airport at 4am, which means leaving a riad in the Medina around 3.30am. The streets are empty and the drive is short, but the walk to the gate with luggage is done in the dark: ask the riad to accompany you. Book the car the day before at the latest; the night taxi guide explains why the rank is not a plan at that hour.

A Sunday evening flight in the school holidays

This is the combination travellers warn about. Take the full three hours, print the boarding pass the day before, and go straight to the airline desk. If the queue at passport control looks long, do not stop at the shops before it: they are after the control anyway.

Hand luggage only

You still need the desk. easyJet requires a document check at bag drop for every passenger, and a paper boarding pass. The time you save by not checking a suitcase is small at Marrakech.

Arriving with a tour starting the same afternoon

Give yourself two hours between landing and the start of anything that will not wait. In a quiet period you will be out in 30 to 45 minutes; at a peak, the margin is what saves the excursion.

Travelling with children or with reduced mobility

Ask your airline for assistance when you book, not at the airport. For children, the longest standing moment is passport control: keep water and something to eat within reach.

A departure checklist

  • The day before: online check-in done, boarding pass printed, car booked.
  • Three and a half hours before: leave the Medina or the city centre.
  • Three hours before: at the airline desk.
  • Then: security, passport control, and only then the shops and cafés.
